Welcome to Kiawah Women’s Foundation
Backpack Buddies Project
The Kiawah Women’s Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organized exclusively for charitable purposes. The mission of the organization is to provide for children in underserved communities in the low country of South Carolina, specifically John’s and Wadmalaw Islands. We are a 100% volunteer organization, and our funds are dedicated to projects that provide food and educational programs for hungry children. Our primary outreach program is a weekend backpack food program, backpack buddies. It serves over 360 "at-risk" children on a weekly basis during the school year. Working with school officials and parents, the backpack buddies program focuses on meeting the nutritional needs and providing educational opportunities for these children.
As many of you know, our local schools shut down to in-classroom learning in March of 2020. During this closure, the school district's free meal program continued to be distributed through a "grab and go" drive-up daily lunch program. Fortunately, Haut Gap was the school responsible for this distribution and our wonderful Communities In Schools social worker was able to continue our Backpack Buddies weekend food dispersal. Additionally, she made us aware of 30 families that needed weekly food staples. Due to the generosity of our donors, we were able to meet the needs of both populations, including weekly Bi-Lo cards enabling families to purchase fresh meat and dairy. Unfortunately, not all of our recipients of food can make it to the grab and go locations and we are missing many children. We will continue to provide weekend food for our Backpack Buddies children as the 2020 school year begins, as allowed by the school. In addition, we have been providing weekend food for a local church who made us aware of the needs for 40 children. We will continue to look for ways to distribute food to children in this unprecedented time.
BECAUSE OUR PACKING LOCATION IS SMALL, WE ARE CURRENTLY
LIMITING ALL VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES TO OUR DIRECTORS.
